| Overall, employment in Anchorage rose 28% from
1995 to 2003. The overall increase in employment was due to
an 40% jump in the private support sector, a 16% increase in
state and local government and a 2% increase in the economic
base. |
| The Municipality's economic base is 17% of the
entire economy and consists of federal government, oil, tourism,
mining, commercial fishing, manufacturing (seafood processing
and wood products) and agriculture. Within the economic base,
the increases in employment from tourism have offset the employment
losses in the agriculture , mining, manufacturing, and commercial
fishing industries. Like many economies in Alaska, the private
support sector is the largest (70%) and fastest growing (40%)
component of the economy. In Anchorage, growth in the private
support sector is from transportation, communication, retail
trade, services and the construction industries. The services
industry has increased the most - 114% from 1995 to 2003. |
| Changes in personal income for the Anchorage generally
follow the employment patterns. Overall income rose 25% from
1995 to 2003. The economic base has experienced an 3% increase,
while the private support sector increased substantially more,
at 42%. The private support sector is being largely fueled by
the growing service sector. State and local government income
has increased since 1995 by 4%.(Chart). ). After adjusting to
inflation, the trends in earnings per job are rising for the
economic base and private support sector and are decreasing
for state and local government. (Chart) |
